Overview

Over 40 weeks, you will apply the transferable skills and knowledge gained to provide high quality mental health and addiction services to those in need and help to support their whänau through the delivery of services as a support worker in areas such as community-based support services, iwi health providers, mental health support, social services, youth work and consumer advocacy.

Core modules

On successfully completing this programme, graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate theory and knowledge of health and wellbeing to identify the health and
    wellbeing aspirations of people from diverse contexts
  • Critically select and apply a range of evidence based practices to support people to meet their health and wellbeing aspirations
  • Maintain awareness of the socio cultural, economic and political factors impacting the wider health and wellbeing environment to provide responsive support practices
  • Critically select and apply a range of evidence based practices informed by
    knowledge of te ao Maori to respond to the health and wellbeing aspirations of tangata whenua
  • Apply advanced strategies and practices to respond with sensitivity to people from diverse contexts
  • Critically reflect on and evaluate own support practice to achieve continuous
    improvement

Applicants must have:

  • Attained the age of 20 years
    and
  • Applicants will be required to complete a Police Vetting Service Request and Consent form
    and
  • Applicants will be required to participate in an information session with a member of the academic
    staff (face to face or via technology)
    and
  • Completed all requirements of the New Zealand Certificate of Health & Wellbeing (Level 3)
    or
  • An equivalent qualification in Health Assistance/Support work
    or
  • Completed a minimum of two years appropriate work or professional experience in a
    Health and Wellbeing role including but not limited to: care giver, health assistant, or nurse.

English language requirement

  • IELTS
    provide evidence of an IELTS overall band score of at least 5.5 (Academic), with no individual band less than 5.0
  • Pearson Academic Test
    have a Pearson Academic Test score of 42 and above with no individual band score less than 36
  • LanguageCert
    have a B2 Communicator Test HIGH PASS and above with no less than a pass in each skill
