Adventure on your doorstep
Beaches, parks and bush walks are all close to the city, so your weekends can be as relaxed or as adventurous as you like. Auckland's large Asian, South Asian and Pacific communities mean great food, festivals and events all year, and a taste of home when you need it.
Cost of living
It's smart to plan ahead, and we're happy to help. Immigration New Zealand currently requires tertiary students to show they have NZ$20,000 for each year of study, or NZ$1,667 per month for courses shorter than a year. Your actual costs depend on accommodation, transport and lifestyle.
Weather
Auckland has a mild climate with four seasons: warm summers made for the beach, cool and rainy winters, and hardly any frost in the city. Pack a good raincoat and you're set.
Public transport
Getting around is easy. Buses, trains and ferries connect Auckland's suburbs with the city centre. An AT HOP card (from Auckland Transport) gives you cheaper fares across the network.
Working while studying
Want to earn while you learn? If your student visa includes work rights, you may be able to work up to 25 hours per week during term, and full-time in eligible scheduled holidays. Your conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand.
After you graduate
From 16 November 2026, the Short-term Graduate Work Visa is expected to give eligible Level 5–7 graduates six months of open work rights. Eligibility conditions apply.
